In this study, we examined the passing rates in reading and in math on the state-mandated exam in Texas for the past 7 years for Hispanic students and students with a programmatic label of Limited English Proficient (LEP). In every case, passing rates in reading and in math were statistically significantly higher for Hispanic students than for students with a label of LEP. The achievement gaps in reading and in math between these two student groups decreased only minimally over this 7-year period, as effect sizes were, with two exceptions, large. Implications of our findings are discussed.

In this article, we discuss the development of online courses in higher education in terms of the instructional quality and economic costs. In our conceptual analysis, we point out problems in developing online courses with sufficient quality due to limited funds being made available for online course development. Moreover, economic costs exist in terms of student recruitment and retention. We urge higher education administrators to think through decisions more carefully than they currently do regarding online instruction. Just because everyone else is doing it does not necessary mean it is a good idea.

The views of 46 mentors of first-year teachers were obtained regarding practices that they viewed as essential for their success in mentoring teachers. Specifically, they were queried about teacher involvement/support, staff development, administrative support, and resource materials. Almost all of the mentor teachers believed a teacher-mentoring program that had well-defined goals was absolutely essential to the retention of beginning teachers. Slightly over half, 56.6%, of the mentor teachers considered that staff development that provided strategies to serve students in special populations better was absolutely essential to the retention of beginning teachers. Mentors commented that the most difficult part of their duty were scheduling conflicts with the mentee, little support from administration, and no guidelines or training in what they were expected to do. Additional comments made by mentors consisted of the need for more time for the new teacher to grow professionally with less emphasis on TAKS scores. They also stated that standardized state testing was hurting schools because too much time was being spent on student test scores.

In this study, the researchers examined the graduation rates and attendance rates over a two-year time period (i.e., 2004–2005 and 2005–2006) for students enrolled in traditional or alternative academic high schools in the State of Texas. Through collection of statewide data using the Texas Education Agency Academic Excellence Indicator System, graduation rates and attendance rates were compared between students enrolled at traditional high schools with at least 70% at-risk students and students enrolled at alternative academic high schools (i.e., a minimum of 70% of at-risk students have to be enrolled). In all four analyses, traditional high schools with at least 70% at-risk students had higher graduation rates and higher attendance rates than did students in the sample of alternative academic high schools. Implications of the findings are discussed.
