Calculating Basic Statistical Procedures in SPSS: A Self-Help and Practical Guide to Preparing Theses, Dissertations, and Manuscripts, is authored by John R. Slate and Ana Rojas-LeBouef from Sam Houston State University. This book is written to assist graduate students and faculty members, as well as undergraduate students, in their use of the Statistical Package of the Social Sciences-PC (SPSS-PC) versions 15-19. Specifically, we have generated a set of steps and screenshots to depict each important step in conducting basic statistical analyses. We believe that this book supplements existing statistical texts in which readers are informed about the statistical underpinnings of basic statistical procedures and in which definitions of terms are provided. Accordingly, other than providing a few basic definitions, we assume that dissertation chairs/thesis directors, students, and/or faculty will obtain their own definition of terms. We hope you find this set of steps and screenshots to be helpful as you use SPSS-PC in conducting basic statistical analyses.

In this study, the authors examined the relationship of 1,128 sixth and seventh grade students’ grades in four subject areas (i.e., math, reading, science, and social studies) and their scores on the Texas Assessment of Knowledge & Skills (TAKS) Reading, Math, and Writing measures for the 2006-2007 school year as a function of their weight status (i.e., Obese versus Non-Obese). Statistically significant differences were found between the percentage of boys and girls who were Obese, as well as among the ethnic categories of Hispanic, African-American, Asian-Pacific Islander, and White and among grade levels. Obese children were found to have statistically significantly lower course grades in math, reading, science, and social studies. Similar results were present for the three TAKS measures. Implications of our findings are discussed, as well as suggestions for further research.

Leaders have increasingly focused on the importance of mission statements in promoting organizational vision and purpose. Given this focus, this research involved content analysis of mission statements from 108 elementary schools. Specifically, the researchers analyzed the mission statements of Exemplary (n = 58) and Academically Unacceptable (n = 50) elementary schools in the State of Texas for the 2008-2009 school year. By analyzing mission statements using a method of classic content analysis and open coding, we generated 15 themes. Eight of these themes replicated themes from a previous study (i.e., Academic Success, Caring Environment, Citizenship, Collaboration, Commitment, Life-Long Learning, Opportunity, and Safe Environment), whereas seven themes emerged anew in this study (i.e., Educate All, Professional Development, Meeting the Needs of Changing Society, Curriculum Alignment, Developing Problem Solvers/Critical Thinkers, Capitalizing on Students’ Individual Strengths, and Describing School Environment.) Implications are discussed.

With the increasing cost of a college education on the rise, college administrators need to address the long term financial, psychological, and academic risks associated with the increased responsibility of personal debt. In this qualitative study, college students’ perspectives regarding the need for a personal financial management center at a regional public institution of higher education in the Southwest were obtained. Themes that emerged from participants’ responses were: (a) the need and desire to understand personal budgeting, (b) learning about personal financial management to obtain a sense of independence, and (c) developing personal responsibility as it relates to controlling need versus want purchasing habits. Implications of our findings are discussed.
