This module supports faculty development workshops held in conjunction with the EAC (ethics across the curriculum) Toolkit. Faculty development workshops bring instructors and researchers together into interdisciplinary teams that tackle the important task of providing students in the occupational and professional areas with ethics education. These workshops allow faculty the time and opportunity to develop resources and materials that support EAC educational efforts. But capturing the experience and knowledge generated can prove challenging. Participants leave the workshop excited about developing ethics activities for their students only to have this excitement wear off as time passes. This module attacks this prob lem in two ways. First, it provides activities that faculty members can review to help prepare for EAC workshops. Second, it provides the opportunity to document and share the products generated during these workshops. Participant’s module ideas are entered into a table provided in the module. Then these are updated as participants share, teach, and refine their modules. This helps faculty in the occupational and professional areas to document ethics integration activities and to trace their trajectory of improvement. This module has been developed as a part of a project funded by the National Science Foundation, "Collaborative Development of Ethics Across the Curriculum Resources and Sharing of Best Practices," NSF-SES-0551779.

This module is based on a hypothetical case with some very real implications. Students are placed in the perspective of decision-makers charged with implementing a project to give public school students in Puerto Rico laptop computers to facilitate their education. Then they are provided with a socio-technical system methodology to help them identify potential problems embedded in laptop technology. Using these tools, they identify and solve ethical and social problems that are likely to arise when public officials work to implement laptop computer technology into the Puerto Rican public school socio-technical system. This module is being developed as a part of an NSF-funded project, "Collaborative Development of Ethics Across the Curriculum Resources and Sharing of Best Practices," NSF SES 0551779.

This module describes how to incorporate ethical considerations into business cases through an Ethics Bowl competition and a written follow-up analysis. It assumes knowledge of ethics tests and a values framework. By working through the competition and follow-up activities, students gain an invaluable opportunity to practice skills in ethical problem solving, communication, and team work. This module makes use of materials provided through the Ethics Bowl competition held annually at meetings of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics. Information on the national competition, devised by Dr. Robert Ladenson, can be found at the website of the Center for the Study of Ethics in the Professions, www.iit.edu/departments/csep. This module is being developed as a part of an NSF-funded project, "Collaborative Development of Ethics Across the Curriculum Resources and Sharing of Best Practices," NSF SES 0551779.

This packet will provide students with the rules and procedures to be adopted for the Engineering Ethics Bowl competitions to be held at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez during the fall and spring semesters of the academic year 2006-7. These rules have been modified from those used in the annual Ethics Bowl competitions held at the meetings of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics. Robert Ladenson from the Illinois Institute of Technology has developed this competition and works with a team of professors and graduate students to develop and judge the yearly competitions. These procedures have been modified to allow participants to practice the following elements of ethical decision making: problem specification, solution generation, solution testing, and solution implementation. Other packets provides cases, scoring sheets, and frameworks to be used in the competition. This module is being developed as a part of an NSF-funded project, "Collaborative Development of Ethics Across the Curriculum Resources and Sharing of Best Practices," NSF SES 0551779.

This module contains the score sheets and cases for the Business Ethics Bowl that is held at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez. The scoring categories are Intelligibility, Integrating Ethical Concerns, Feasibility, and Moral Imagination and Creativity. These score sheets can easily be converted into a grading rubric for an in-dept case analysis. The Ethics Bowl was developed by Robert Ladenson at the Illinois Institute of Technology. The national competition is held every year during the conference meetings of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics. This modification of the APPE score sheets reflects the focus of the UPRM Business Ethics Bowl on decision-making as opposed to more general issues analysis. The categories also work from an analogy between the designing process in engineering and problem-solving in ethics. For a further explanation of the scoring procedure, see the module posted by this author for Ethics Bowl Rules and Procedures. This module is being developed as a part of an NSF-funded project, "Collaborative Development of Ethics Across the Curriculum Resources and Sharing of Best Practices," NSF SES 0551779.

This module developed for classes in Engineering and Computer Ethics at UPRM employs a value/virtue approach to encourage students to reflect on the ethical issues and problems that arise in group or team work. Throughout the class, students are given group assignments for which they receive group grades that are distributed to each individual member. The module then provides students with ethical goals to grade them as they execute these assignments. Student groups develop strategies for realizing these goals. They also envision pitfalls that often prevent groups from working cooperatively such as the Abilene Paradox, groupthink, and group polarization. Finally, students develop an assessment process based on these goals that they use to complete a group self-evaluation at the end of the semester. The primary purpose of this module is to use group work and cooperative learning as an occasion to reflect on the different ethical issues and problems that arise in collective activity. This module is being developed as a part of an NSF-funded project, "Collaborative Development of Ethics Across the Curriculum Resources and Sharing of Best Practices," NSF SES 0551779.

This module is a derived copy of a module that supports faculty development workshops. It is developed in conjunction with the EAC (ethics across the curriculum) Toolkit. Faculty development workshops bring instructors and researchers together into interdisciplinary teams to tackle the important task of providing students in the occupational and professional areas with ethics education. These workshops allow faculty the time and opportunity to develop resources and materials that support EAC educational efforts. But capturing the experience and knowledge generated can prove challenging. Post workshop enthusiasm and commitment wear off wear off as time passes. This module sustains the developing EAC community by providing an online environment in which participants can continue to develop and share the products created in EAC workshops. The community built up out of the collaborations that take place in faculty development workshops is maintained by having participants continue their collaboration through the testing, refining, and sharing of EAC modules and best practices. This module has been developed as a part of a project funded by the National Science Foundation, "Collaborative Development of Ethics Across the Curriculum Resources and Sharing of Best Practices," NSF-SES-0551779.

This module modifies the decision making format published earlier in Connexions under the title, "Ethical Decision Making in Engineering." Students are presented with four cases involving challenges to academic integrity, Treasures from Troy, The Free Rider?, A Different Kind of Recycling, and Teachers Fight Back. Each of these decision scenarios provides a narrative that is terminated at a point of decision. Students are required to make a decision to bring the narrative to completion. To help focus matters, each decision scenario is followed by solution alternatives. Students are invited to evaluate and rank these alternatives in terms of three ethics tests (reversibility, harm/beneficence, and publicity). Another test, a feasibility test, invites students to think carefully about whether their ethical solution can be implemented and what kind of obstacles are likely to arise in its implementation. Each decision scenario/solution alternatives/test description set is followed by a solution evaluation matrix, a table where students discuss and evaluate the alternatives in terms of their ethics and feasibility. The final page of this activity provides a short history of each scenario. This module is being developed as a part of an NSF-funded project, "Collaborative Development of Ethics Across the Curriculum Resources and Sharing of Best Practices," NSF SES 0551779.
