As political accountability and economic reality increasingly influence higher education, many leadership preparation programs are seeking cost effective instructional delivery systems that yield highly effective results. Simultaneously, large numbers of graduate students are seeking quality leadership preparation programs that provide both learning flexibility and convenience at a reasonable price. Asynchronous online courses provide students with schedule flexibility, decreased travel expenses and decreased travel time commitments. These online courses are particularly attractive to working professionals, students with parental responsibilities and students residing in remote geographic areas. In response to market demand, many leadership preparation programs have turned to hybrid courses, online courses or fully online programs. Coupled with these phenomena are seasoned leadership faculty members who can be thoroughly entrenched in traditional instructional methodologies. The development of a critical mass of faculty with the capacity to overcome the organizational barriers to change is fundamental to the successful integration of online components into leadership preparation programs. How can leadership preparation programs most effectively integrate online learning activities and enhance program vitality without sacrificing program quality? This paper attempts to provide a partial answer to that question through a synopsis of the research regarding online learning and leadership preparation programs.

Leadership is both objective and subjective. Some of our critics have suggested that we overemphasize the objective aspect of leadership: facts, data, and test scores. Others state we spend too much time addressing leadership at the expense of the actual management of schools. At the same time leadership is subjective, in that it involves the feelings, beliefs, and values of others. I might suggest that management as we define it, is closer to the objective side of leadership – and leadership as we define it, is closely aligned with the subjective side. In many respects, I have wondered if we have not caused confusion and misunderstanding in our profession by insisting on a difference between management and leadership. This dichotomy may have not served us well. The eight nationally recognized authors represented in Educational Administration: The Roles of Leadership and Management clearly address both sides of this dichotomy – and do so in meaningful and understandable ways. And they present meaningful dialogue on the important aspect of management. Yes, the pendulum seems to swing back and forth, as lead author Dembowski states. But all eight authors make this point: Leadership and management are both important functions, but they have different purposes and they seek to obtain different outcomes. This is truly a great addition to the knowledge base in educational administration. I am hopeful that you will enjoy the book, and find it useful in your classes. Theodore Creighton - Virginia Tech

Expectations for productivity in published scholarship have certainly increased in recent years for university faculty seeking tenure and promotion in colleges of education and other colleges (Brown, 2006; Tierney, 2001). In response, more and more leaders at research universities sponsor formal mentoring programs organized to promote the development and success of tenure-earning faculty.1 However, many administrators and faculty are trying to figure out how to get started and what to do. They are seeking proven strategies for developing, implementing, and assessing formalized faculty mentoring initiatives (Mullen, Kennedy, & Keller, 2006). Because of this need to share ideas and tips, we present our own attempts at best practice. We include preliminary results derived from our piloted program.

A glance inside a classroom reveals the students, aspiring superintendents, requesting that their professor present to them the realities of school district leadership. The professor, a past superintendent, responds to the call by integrating conventional wisdom based upon his thirty years of educational leadership into theory. In the following class, the professor presents job survival skills that future superintendents ought to know. From accepting the challenge, raising the achievement bar, building teams, and sharing and learning, the job survival skills of the superintendency are instilled. The professor concludes his presentation of job survival skills with a passionate plea or promise that the future school district leaders need to commit, the same promise the professor as a superintendent embraced for over three decades.

Increasingly, education schools are being blamed for intractable social problems they did not create and cannot solve. They have been faulted for the quality of the people who choose to become teachers and administrators. They have been blamed for the woes of low-performing schools and school systems. They have been criticized for their inability to close the achievement gap between the most advantaged and most disadvantaged children in America. No other professional school is held similarly responsible.

The educational administration curriculum is being recast to emphasize academic as well as applied knowledge. Training for the applied nature of educational administration has been a challenge for most graduate programs as they emphasized the academic and theoretical approach to the leadership and administration of schools. The applied nature of educational administration has defined the field since its inception and the teaching of performance behaviors has become an integral component of the educational administration curriculum. The educational administration curriculum will, in the future, reflect this aspect of teaching and learning.

The proliferation of inappropriate master’s degrees in educational administration is a tough challenge facing efforts to reform school leadership in the nation. In the state of Illinois alone, there are 26 universities and colleges offering 32 master’s degree programs in educational leadership. In all, candidates enroll in 16 different types of specializations hardly distinguishable from one another—four different types of M.A. degrees, three M.S. degrees, four M.Ed. degrees, two M.A.Ed. degrees, and three M.S.Ed. degrees. Most programs do not require a master’s degree thesis. In addition, many programs have marginalized studies in social foundations of education, and some do not have specific courses of study in educational research methodology. It was recommended that states’ efforts to reform school leadership start with the overhaul of master’s degree programs.
