I have written this book primarily for serious and talented mathematics scholars, seniors or firstyear graduate students, who by the time they finish their schooling should have had the opportunity to study in some detail the great discoveries of our subject. What did we know and how and when did we know it? I hope this book is useful toward that goal, especially when it comes to the great achievements of that part of mathematics known as analysis. I have tried to write a complete and thorough account of the elementary theories of functions of a single real variable and functions of a single complex variable. Separating these two subjects does not at all jive with their development historically, and to me it seems unnecessary and potentially confusing to do so. On the other hand, functions of several variables seems to me to be a very different kettle of fish, so I have decided to limit this book by concentrating on one variable at a time.

This collection describes a course project for a Partial Differential Equations course (Math 480) held at the California State University in Northridge during Fall Semester of 2009. The project was a joint project issued by two professors  Carol Shubin and Gloria Melara.

The present collection utilizes a number of user defined mprograms, in combination with built in MATLAB functions, for solving a variety of probabilistic problems. These mfiles are included as text files in the collection New Prob mfiles. We use the term mfunction to designate a userdefined function as distinct from the basic MATLAB functions which are part of the MATLAB package. An mprocedure (or sometimes a procedure) is an mfile containing a set of MATLAB commands which carry out a prescribed set of operations. Generally, these will prompt for (or assume) certain data upon which the procedure is carried out. We use the term mprogram (or often mfile) to refer to either an mfunction or an mprocedure. Although most of the mprograms were written for MATLAB version 4.2, they work for versions 5.1, 5.2, and 7.04. The latter versions offer some new features which may make more efficient implementation of some of the mprograms, and which make possible some new ones. With one exception (so noted), these are not exploited in this collection, because of the pedagogical value of dealing with explicitly developed procedures whose dependence on basic MATLAB is displayed. These programs, with perhaps some exceptions, also run on the MATLAB alternatives SCILAB and OCTAVE. Users of these latter programs should be able to make appropriate adjustments if needed. In addition to the mprograms there is a collection of mfiles for specific problems with properly formatted data which can be entered into the workspace by calling the file. These mfiles come from a variety of sources ( e.g., exams or problem sets, hence the odd names) and may be useful for examples and exercises. This collection is in the text file New Prob mfiles.

VIGRE working groups are known as PFUGs. Pronounced like "fugue," the acronym derives from the groups' composition of Postdocs, Faculty, Undergraduates and Graduate students. The name derives from the musical meaning for fugue, "an idea that is introduced by one voice and developed by others."
