This collection focuses on workflow and applicationbased teaching rather than individual DSP algorithms implementation. The idea is that you start from algorithm development and show how easily an idea is stepbystep prototyped and deployed on the hardware. The collection contains a suite of example applications in various fields such as Audio, Video, Imaging, Communications and Control. The basic examples enable students to experiment with realtime DSP applications, showing how to create prototypes using the Mathworks and Texas Instruments infrastructure (hardware and software). Advanced level examples are also included, where the basic tools are integrated with external dedicated hardware and/or software modules (designed by the user).

Our project originally realized an OFDM transmitter on the NI PCI5640 IFRIO (intermediate frequency, reconfigurable input/output) transceiver, which contains the VirtexII Pro Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and the receiver in MATLAB. It was completed in about 8 weeks as a final project for Digital Signal Processing Laboratory (ECE 420) at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign. Using the latest LabView software, we were able to create an incredibly flexible OFDM transceiver that could be scaled up or down with ease. This of course is especially exciting given the prospect of cognitive radio, for which OFDM is a heavy favorite scheme of choice. With the ability to scale the number of subcarriers up and down with little impact on the receiver structure, adapting to open spectrum and conditions becomes much easier. The continuation of this project will culminate in a significant educational Connexions (CNX) module collection complete with written and visual tutorials. YouTUBE videos recorded from Camtasia Studio will close the gap between reading about the project and seeing it come together. In the end, the collection will fully detail how to implement a complete OFDM SDR system with transmitter and receiver. The final product will run on a frontend receiver utilizing National Instruments' PXI chassis populated with the 5660 digital downconverter/highspeed digitizer in conjuction with the 5671 AWG/upconverter. The receiver backend will be purely softwaredefined and utilize LabVIEW.
