    There are many techniques that are used to mitigate the degradation
    due to <term>intersymbol interference (ISI)</term>. ISI can be
    thought of as adding <term>memory</term> by the channel. The
    techniques at the transmitter include 1,2 while 3,4 control 
    effects of ISI at the receiver. Some of them are:

      <item>Designing bandlimited modulation signals</item>
      <item>Equalizers at the receiver</item>
      <item>Maximum likelihood sequence detection</item>
