      <emphasis xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/">strength</emphasis>.  We will use the mathematical concept of
      the <emphasis xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/">norm</emphasis> to quantify this notion for both continuous-time
      and discrete-time signals.  First we consider a way to quantify the size of a signal which
      may already be familiar.
