Summary: A "Quick Start" manual for using the Stanford Research Systems DG535 Pulse Generator

Introduction

This module is by no means a complete reference to the DG535 Digital Delay/Pulse Generator. It is simply a reference for getting the generator started quickly with the bare minimum of functions. For further reference, go to the full Operating Manual and Programming reference published by Stanford Research Systems or view the link to Stanford Research Systems' website in the links bar.

Getting Started

LCD Display

If you ever find that the display screen on the pulse generator is unreadable, you can adjust the brightness of the LCD using the grey LCD arrows (the +/- and EXC buttons) on the right of the front panel. This only works if the green arrows button in the middle of the front panel is lit. If not, press the lone button below it once to switch from NUM to the arrows.

Navigating the Menus

Note:

To select any variable from a display menu, push the button that originally opened that menu. (Ex. Push the TRIG button to open a display menu. Then use the underlining cursor to highlight the desired variable. Then push the TRIG button again to select that variable.)

There are two different methods to set any numerical value:

  1. Using the cursor arrows, move the cursor to underline the desired digit to be set. Then using the up and down arrows, the digit can be set from 0-9.
  2. If you push the lone button in the middle of the front panel until NUM is lit green, this will allow the user to manually type in the desired numerical value for a given variable using the number pad. Note that you can also use the E and +/- buttons on the right to input your value in scientific notation.

Setting Up the SRS Digital Delay/Pulse Generator

Establishing an external trigger using the SRS generator:

  1. Connect the To output of the generator to the ext. trigger of the oscilloscope. It is also helpful to split To and plug it in also to channel one of the oscilloscope to monitor it.
  2. This synchronizes the rate of the generator with the display rate of the oscilloscope, thus helping with display reading and other functions.

Setting up the SRS generator to produce pulses at a given rate (Hz):

  1. Push the TRIG button under the Menu section and select Int from the display menu.
  2. Now change the set rate value to the desired rate value by using the methods previously discussed.

Setting up the SRS generator to produce pulses at a given length (s):

  1. The AB signal pulse width will be the difference in the delay length set for each A and B.
  2. Push the DELAY button under the Menu section once, then set the initial delay value for signal A using the methods previously discussed.
  3. After setting A, push the DELAY button again, then set the initial delay value for signal B.

Note:

The generated pulse width must always be less than 1/To. Otherwise you will be trying to make a pulse which is longer than the period between pulses! If the pulse width exceeds 1/To, the RATE LED, under the TRIGGER section, will light up red.

Setting up the SRS generator to produce pulses at a given amplitude (V):

  1. Push the OUTPUT button under the Menu section and select AB from the display menu.
  2. Set your load to High Z.
  3. Select VAR from the display menu and then set the amplitude voltage using the methods previously discussed.
  4. After setting desired amplitude, set the offset to zero.

Note:

The amplitude of the pulse can be verified using the oscilloscope to check if the set amplitude is correct, as well as the set pulse delay length.
