<name>Who Needs a Connexions Account</name>
    <para id="whoneedspara1">
You need a Connexions account if you want to create, edit, and publish content in Connexions. The only prerequisite for an account is a valid e-mail address. In addition, if you have colleagues who work with you on your Connexions documents, they also must obtain accounts before you can list them as collaborating authors.

<name>Who Does Not Need a Connexions Account</name>
    <para id="whoneedspara2">
An account is not required to view the content within Connexions. Your students and associates who want to view the content you publish in Connexions can do so without an account. The only prerequisite for viewing content in Connexions is access to the Internet and an Internet browser.

	<name>Requesting an Account</name>

      <para id="accountpara1">
	To obtain a Connexions account, use the following steps:

	<list id="accountlist" type="enumerated">
          <item>Display the Connexions home page (http://cnx.rice.edu) with your Internet browser.</item>
	  <item>Click on the <emphasis>New author or instructor?</emphasis> link in the 
	  "Log in" sidebar. The <cnxn target="requestfig">Request a 
	  Connexions Account</cnxn> page displays.

          <item>Type in your title, name, e-mail, and home page URL. 
          The fields with red squares next to the field names are 
          required. <note>Please enter an accurate e-mail address. The system sends instructions for activating your account to the e-mail address you enter. If the instructions are not followed, your account is not activated. </note></item> 
          <item>Click <code>Continue</code>. The "Account Request: 
          Select Username" page displays.</item> 
          <item>Type in a user name. A list of suggested usernames that 
          are based on your entries in the First, Middle, and Last Name 
          fields is shown.</item>
          <item>(Optional) Type in the fields of study for your contribution,
          indicate how you found out about Connexions, type in any comments
          you may have, and indicate if you would be willing to help test 
          new features. </item>
          <item>Click <code>Continue</code>. The "Account Request: 
          Confirmation" page displays.</item> 
          <item>Review the site license agreement.</item>
          <item>Select the checkbox that indicates you have read and agree 
          to the site license.</item>
          <item>Click <code>Request Account</code>. The "Account Request 
          Complete" page displays. Connexions will promptly send an e-mail to the 
          address you entered in the step above. The e-mail contains 
          instructions for activating your new account.</item>
	</list>
      </para><para id="element-836">You have 24 hours from the time the e-mail was sent from Connexions to follow the instructions and activate your account. If you do not act within those 24 hours, click <code>Forget your password?</code> in the "Log in" sidebar and request that another e-mail be sent to you.</para>

    <section id="loginout">
      <name>Logging In and Out</name>
      <para id="loginoutpara1">
        Once you have a Connexions account, you can log into the system to create or edit material. To log into Connexions, enter your Connexions user name and password in 
        the <cnxn target="element-605">Log in</cnxn> sidebar and click <code>Log in</code>. 
      </para>

        Once you have logged in, the "Log in" sidebar is replaced by 
        the Workspaces sidebar.

        To log out, click the <emphasis>Log out</emphasis> link located in the 
        <cnxn target="element-988">Personal toolbar</cnxn>, in the upper 
        right side of the Connexions home page.
