Summary: In Summer 2007, a Virginia Tech Doctoral cohort completed EDAE 6924, School Community Partnerships. Here is a personal reflection authored by Roy Walton.
My results from the Are You a Good Listener Survey are as follows: My score was 90, which based on the rubric indicates that I’m a good listener. The Communication Style Survey results determined that I was a Thinker. This assessment represents a true assessment of self as listed under the strengths of the Thinker. In the area of risks being seen as, I also find the findings to be quite accurate. As the candidate for the Chief Administrator Officer of a Charter School I was screened by an Industrial Psychologist. His findings were as follows: disciplined, practical, analytical, organized, honest, integrity, and a strong work ethic. These characteristics are somewhat in line with the Communication Style Survey. It is most important to be on guard against the items listed under the risks being seen as. There are times that I hesitate waiting to be certain to make decisions, as well being so concerned with right/wrong that you pay little attention to people’s feelings.
My philosophy of leadership in parent and community involvement and relationships are centered on data that suggest involved parents have more successful students. The data also suggest that effective schools have good parental involvement. It is critical to involve parents in the education of their children. This is done by developing a climate and culture of effective communication and by welcoming parents by making them active partners in their child’s learning. My role as the leader is to model and facilitate behavior that is professional, welcoming, pleasant, helpful, and nurturing. This modeling can contribute to better student teacher relationships which will encourage greater student success.
My vision for the school in regards to parent and community involvement is to establish a positive relationship with all stakeholders. Parents, students teachers, community and business partners are the stakeholders that you need on board in your efforts to establish effective parent and community involvement. A good leader also cultivates relationships with agencies that support parents and students, such as, law enforcement agencies, churches, and civic organizations. These are considered external sources that can be supportive of the school and its programs. The Instructional Leader must provide for opportunities for staff and parent interactions as often as possible. Develop PTA programs centered on student work and achievement. Provide for volunteer opportunities, to include tutoring, chaperoning field trips, library assistant, etc. These things have to be done under the governance of school system policies and regulations.
The role of the leader in the endeavor of parent and community relations is one of a facilitator, and demonstrator. I need to be the person who leads by example to establish and maintain excellent relations that benefit the school and its students. It is important to be visible, accessible and to become the public relations expert to help in making sure all the stakeholders are included.
