        <para id="id2253262">The nodules on this patient’s finger, ear, toe, and external maleolus are tophi. Diagnostic proof emerged when the tophus on her finger discharged chalky-white material containing needle-shaped sodium urate crystals that were negatively birefringent under polarized light microscopy.</para>
