Statement of Values Pre-Test

Summary: Values-based decision making is becoming more and more important in the context of business and professional ethics. This module uses the Statement of Values prepared for the faculty of the College of Business Administration at the University of Puerto Rico - Mayaguez as the occasion for practicing values-based decision making. Students are presented different scenarios taken from situations in business and professional ethics. They are asked to discuss these scenarios in terms of the values promoted, maintained, or frustrated. This module has been developed in conjunction with the NSF-funded EAC Toolkit effort, NSF SES 0551779.

In this module, you will read different scenarios taken from situations that arise in business and professional ethics. After each reading each scenario you will answer questions about the values the scenario maintains, supports, enhances, realizes, or frustrates. The objective is to introduce you to some of the issues you will be studying in this class. This module will also help you to understand and practice value-based decision making.
Directions: Read each of the scenarios below. Then answer the questions that follow.
    A supervisor in a company in Puerto Rico removes a woman engineer from his team because a member of the Japanese engineering team with which the Puerto Rican team is working objects to working with women.
  • Are there any ethical values frustrated in this scenario? Yes or No.
  • Are there any ethical values realized, maintained, or promoted in this scenario? Yes or No.
  • List the values pertinent to questions one and two.
    A company makes new employees agree to waiving their right to sue for wrongful dismissal. They do this by inserting a clause to this effect in the employment contract.
  • Are there any ethical values frustrated in this scenario? Yes or No.
  • Are there any ethical values realized, maintained, or promoted in this scenario? Yes or No.
  • List the values pertinent to questions one and two.
    A woman has trouble getting to work on time because she has to drop off her son at school. The other members of her work team arrange for her to arrive at work later. She then stays longer to compensate for the time missed in the morning.
  • Are there any ethical values frustrated in this scenario? Yes or No.
  • Are there any ethical values realized, maintained, or promoted in this scenario? Yes or No.
  • List the values pertinent to questions one and two.
    A company installs cameras in its bathrooms to find out who has been vandalizing them. The cameras are hidden, and the employees are not informed that they are there.
  • Are there any ethical values frustrated in this scenario? Yes or No.
  • Are there any ethical values realized, maintained, or promoted in this scenario? Yes or No.
  • List the values pertinent to questions one and two.
    After the Challenger shuttle explosion, an engineer refused to participate in his company's efforts to cover up information crucial to understanding the cause of the explosion. Since he violated company orders and publicized information the company considered confidential, he was branded by his supervisors as insubordinate.
