Overview

In this assignment, you will create a résumé and letter of application that are geared toward a particular job advertisement or career fair event. You will use actual education and work-related information about yourself to create useful and realistic documents. This assignment will either help you to create a résumé and letter from “the ground up,” or it will help you to substantially improve documents that you have previously prepared.

Purpose

The résumé and letter of application document your education and experience for prospective employers. They should be prepared well before your graduation date and updated continuously throughout your career. You will use strategies of effective résumé creation along with good letter‑writing skills to create these documents.

Tasks

First, identify an audience for your résumé and letter—perhaps a company you wish to intern with, an organization of interest to you, or an institution that has posted an advertisement in the newspaper or on the Internet. When you submit your documents for a grade, attach a short paragraph identifying the company name and the position to which you are applying (or simply attach a copy of the advertisement).

Next, recall all relevant information about your education, work experience, honors, special skills, and so on. If you already have an existing draft of your résumé, make notes about what you would change on your draft. Then apply strategies of good document design to create an effective résumé.

Last, draft a letter of application that is specific to the position you are seeking. Think about what you know about your audience and about effective letter‑writing skills and remember to draft a complete, concise, and courteous letter.

Evaluation

We will evaluate your résumé and letter of application according to the following criteria:

  • Included and effectively formatted all vital heading information, pertinent education, work experience, honors, etc., to create a complete résumé
  • Organized information in the résumé appropriately (headings, chronology) and included all important aspects of this information (dates, descriptions of tasks, job titles, etc.)
  • Constructed concise, concrete, action-oriented phrases in the résumé
  • Created an aesthetically pleasing résumé
  • Created a letter of application with a reader-oriented tone
  • Elaborated, in your letter, on the education and/or work experience qualities that best suit the position you identified

Edited and proofread both documents for sentence-level correctness in terms of grammar, punctuation, spelling, and usage
