      Definition of a lens

      Lenses

A lens is a custom view of Connexions content. You can think of it as a fancy kind of list that will let you see Connexions through the eyes of organizations and people you trust.

      What is in a lens?

Lens makers point to Connexions materials (modules and collections), creating a guide that includes their own comments and descriptive tags about the content.

      Who can create a lens?

Any individual Connexions member, a community, or a respected organization.

Sample Proposal #1 (Course: Principles of Environmental Engineering)

Module by: The Cain Project in Engineering and Professional Communication

Summary: This is a sample proposal adapted from an actual student submission.

Our report will examine one highly touted alternative energy source: solar energy. Specifically, we will investigate how this technology could impact energy consumption and emissions produced at Rice University. We will research the costs of energy currently consumed at Rice and compare these costs to those associated with implementing a limited-scale array of solar panels. Our goal will be to evaluate the real impacts and economic viability of solar energy.

Methods

As background for our study, we will require the following resources:

  • Official U.S. government figures on energy use and consumption.
  • Background information on solar energy technologies. We have found a few books on the topic and plan to conduct a literature search for review articles on the subject.
  • Information on commercial solar energy providers. We will consult the Internet for corporate and product information. We will be looking not just for background information on the technology, but for a company that would be willing to provide us with a sample quote for the installation of a hypothetical system on the Rice University campus.
  • Information on current energy usage at Rice University. We plan to interview engineers at the Rice Physical Plant to obtain this information.
  • Information on Rice buildings in order to determine a good implementation to evaluate. We will obtain this information from the Facilities Engineering and Planning Department.

We expect to organize the paper into the following sections:

  • Introduction—Problem set up
  • Background on solar energy technology—history, current state of the art, implementation issues
  • Analysis of Rice University implementation—current energy usage at Rice, description of our implementation, impact analysis, recommendations
  • Conclusion—Summary of our study
