'My Favorites' is a special kind of lens which you can use to bookmark modules and collections directly in Connexions. 'My Favorites' can only be seen by you, and collections saved in 'My Favorites' can remember the last module you were on. You need a Connexions account to use 'My Favorites'.

      Definition of a lens

      Lenses

A lens is a custom view of Connexions content. You can think of it as a fancy kind of list that will let you see Connexions through the eyes of organizations and people you trust.

      What is in a lens?

Lens makers point to Connexions materials (modules and collections), creating a guide that includes their own comments and descriptive tags about the content.

      Who can create a lens?

Any individual Connexions member, a community, or a respected organization.

Overland Trail Families

Module by: Interactive Mathematics Program

Intent

Students read this reference page about extended family units on the Overland Trail in preparation for constructing families of their own.

Mathematics

This information continues to develop the context in which students will construct, interpret, and manipulate algebraic expressions and equations.

Progression

Students read this diary entry in preparation for the activity Creating Families.

Approximate Time

10 minutes

Using the Reference Page

Tell students that, during this unit, they will be planning and carrying out a trip of their own along the Overland Trail. The first step will be to develop a family of travelers for which to be responsible.

Have students read the excerpt from the diary of Catherine Haun aloud to learn more about families that traveled the trail. Spend some time, either during the reading or afterward, helping students develop an image of what is described in the diary. There will be terms many students may be unfamiliar with, such as schooner, oxen, and draught.
