The activities in A Journey Back in Time are designed to accomplish two goals: to orient students to the historical context of the unit and to begin the development of one of the key mathematical ideas that drives the unit.
This unit develops the mathematical idea of variables and explores equations and graphs of linear functions. In A Journey Back in Time, students will begin to use variables and equations in a representational way—to stand for variable quantities and the relationships among them—as the precursor for being able to understand the algebraic manipulations that form the core of most school algebra programs but are often taught in purely procedural terms.
The activities in A Journey Back in Time set the historic context of the unit. The introductory activities offer students a sense of the history surrounding the Overland Trail, which is a collective name for a group of trails that led from Missouri to the West. In the last few activities, students encounter the mathematics of algebraic representation and equation solving. In addition, they begin work on the first POW of the unit.
