The handout provides instructions for how students can use OWL-Space (limited to use by Rice students) to schedule a writing consultation during times writing mentors are available.</md:abstract>

      <name>What are writing mentors?</name>
      <para id="id13088663">Writing mentors are available to meet one-on-one to discuss your CHEM 124/154 Report on Michael Crichton’s <emphasis>State of Fear</emphasis>. Mentors can answer questions about the assignment, brainstorm with you to generate ideas, and help you organize ideas or focus your discussion. When you have completed a draft, writing mentors can help you to assess it for argument, organization, readability, and coherence. They cannot act as editors, however, and will not violate the Rice Honor Code. </para>

      <name>How do I set up a consultation?</name>
      <para id="id13031829">To work with a mentor, visit the SCHEDULE section of CHEM 124/154 OWL-Space. Consulting times are marked with the word “Mentor” followed by a mentor’s initials. Find a consulting time that works for you. Consulting appointments begin every 30 minutes (for example, for a session marked from 8 to 10 pm, the appointments are at 8 pm, 8:30 pm, 9 pm, and 9:30 pm).</para>
      <para id="id13128460">Click on the session you would like. View time slots already taken in that session under “Description.” If your desired time slot is not taken, click “Revise.” In the text box labeled “Message,” type your NetID (the name before @rice.edu in your email address) and the time you would like your 30-minute consultation to begin. </para>
      <para id="id13696811">For example, if your email address is <link src="mailto:abc1234@rice.edu">abc1234@rice.edu</link> and you want consulting from 6:30 to 7 pm, you would type the following: abc1234 6:30</para>
      <para id="id13523305">Click “Save Event” at the bottom of the page. If your desired time slot is taken, chose another 30-minute time slot in that mentor’s consultation window, or click “back to calendar” to choose another time/date.</para>
      <para id="id11981332">Once you have signed up, the mentor will contact you by email to confirm your appointment and to arrange a place to meet. If you do not hear from your mentor by 24 hours before your scheduled session, you may contact him/her at the following email address (all @ rice.edu):</para>
