      <para xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/" id="id47281887">Functions are used whenever <emphasis xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/">one variable depends on another variable.</emphasis> This relationship between two variables is the most important in mathematics. It is simply not true. There may be a relationship between these two quantities—for instance, the <emphasis xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/">sum</emphasis> of these two variables might be the total number of soldiers, and the<emphasis xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/"> difference</emphasis> between these two quantities might suggest whether the battle will be a fair one. But there is no <emphasis xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/">dependency</emphasis> relationship—that is, no way to say “If you tell me the number of Greek soldiers, I will tell you the number of Trojan soldiers”—so this is not a function.</para>
      <para xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/" id="id47779844">The second example is subtler: it confuses the <emphasis xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/">dependent</emphasis> and the <emphasis xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/">independent</emphasis> variables.
