</m:math>. So if you push on a 3kg object with a 12N force, what will the acceleration be?”</para>

Newton didn’t start out <emphasis xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/">knowing</emphasis> that

In science, you begin with data—that is, numbers—and attempt to find a mathematical function that will <emphasis xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/">model </emphasis>the data. Then you use that function to make predictions for new data. If the predictions come true, you gain confidence in your model.</para>
