    <para xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/" id="id8222068">What does it mean for two complex numbers to be <emphasis xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/">equal?</emphasis> As always, equality asserts that two things are exactly the same. <m:math><m:mn>7</m:mn><m:mo>+</m:mo><m:mi>3i</m:mi></m:math> is <emphasis xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/">not</emphasis> equal to 7, or to <m:math><m:mi>3i</m:mi></m:math>, or to <m:math><m:mn>7</m:mn><m:mo>-</m:mo><m:mi>3i</m:mi></m:math>, or to <m:math><m:mn>3</m:mn><m:mo>+</m:mo><m:mi>7i</m:mi></m:math>. It is not equal to anything except <m:math><m:mn>7</m:mn><m:mo>+</m:mo><m:mi>3i</m:mi></m:math>.</para>
    <para xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/" id="id8672099"><name xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/">Definition of Equality</name>Two complex numbers are <emphasis xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/">equal</emphasis> to each other only if <emphasis xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/">their real parts are equal, and their imaginary parts are equal.</emphasis></para>

We can use this, for instance, to solve for two separate variables.</para>

    <para xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/" id="id8221946">The real numbers have the property that for any two real numbers <m:math><m:mi>a</m:mi></m:math> and <m:math><m:mi>b</m:mi></m:math>, exactly one of the following three statements must be true: <m:math><m:mi>a</m:mi><m:mo>=</m:mo><m:mi>b</m:mi></m:math>, <m:math><m:mi>a</m:mi><m:mo>&gt;</m:mo><m:mi>b</m:mi></m:math>, or <m:math><m:mi>a</m:mi><m:mo>&lt;</m:mo><m:mi>b</m:mi></m:math>. This is one of those properties that seems almost too obvious to bother with. But it becomes more interesting when you realize that the complex numbers do <emphasis xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/">not</emphasis> have that property. Consider two simple numbers, <m:math><m:mi>i</m:mi></m:math> and 1. Which of the following is true?</para>

    <para xmlns:md="http://cnx.rice.edu/mdml/0.4" xmlns:m="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:bib="http://bibtexml.sf.net/" id="id9281344">Visually, this corresponds to the fact that all the real numbers can be laid out on a number line: “greater than” means “to the right of” and so on. The complex numbers cannot be laid out on a number line. They are sometimes pictured on a 2-dimensional graph, where the real part is the <m:math><m:mi>x</m:mi></m:math> coordinate and the imaginary part is the <m:math><m:mi>y</m:mi></m:math> coordinate. But one point on a graph is neither greater than, nor less than, another point!</para>
