Challenge: Burden Capacity

Unit: Working with Animals

Subject: Large Animal Husbandry

Description: You will be farming several large fields. In order to plant and harvest you will need to use an animal of burden. Research the burden attributes of each animal and determine which would be best for your needs.

Situation

Animal output can be the amount of work done by an animal in a given span of time. Inputs, therefore, are the needs of the animal to work, such as food, water, shelter, and other care. Considering these inputs for each animal, which animal of burden can work for the lowest cost?

Consider how external factors such as field area, soil composition and crop type might affect your answer.

Time Limit: This challenge will take approximately two hours to complete.

This question may be answered by comparing the speed, strength and endurance of each animal of burden (ox, horse, donkey, other). Students should rate each animal as high, medium, or low. This can be done by using a table format.
