What is a Smartboard?
![]() |
Smartboard is an interactive whiteboard that is used for exciting and engaging presentations and lessons. The smartboard helps children learn in a more encouraging and motivating environment. The smartboard also allows for positive engagement and interaction which leads to a better understanding and learning of educational concepts. The smartboard is a fairly easy tool to use in the classroom. The key to using the smartboard is to combine your computer with the whiteboard(digital projector). The smartbaord is connected to your computer and the digital projector, which then enables a direct touch-sensitive display. Once you have combined and connected the board and the computer, you are able to control computer applications from your smartboard. In addition, you are also able to write notes on the white board and save that work for another time to bring up again later. The smartboard can be used in many different ways and for different purposes!

Students can demonstrate how they solved a math problem by using math manipulatives on the smartboard projection. Teacher must scan math maninupaltives as separate objects and save them in a file. The students are able to use the maniupuatives to discuss and demonstrate how they solved a particular problem. Many students may come up one at a time or in a group setting and solve the problems.

The smartboard can be used for teaching writing and grammar. The smartboard may be used to do a daily language assignment. The teacher will post a sentence or paragraph and the students will come up and make correct grammar changes. The students will first make their corrections at their seat, then come up and make the corrections on the board so the whole class is able to see the corrections. The smartboard may also be used to revise writing drafts as a class. The teacher may post a rough draft of a particular writing assignment and the students will collaboratively revise the paper.

The smartboard can be used to demonstrate and actively participate in science through inquiry-based internet experiments. Examples include: time estimation and graphing, waves and sound, light, electricity and magnetism, and atomic physics. The teacher can go to these sites and lead the class through the experiments. Students may come up in partner or group settings to participate in the experiment.
The smart board may also be used to create diagrams of a cell, electrical circuit, water cycle, and/or animal cycle. The teacher and students will create a slide show with each component of the cycle on a separate slide. They will discuss and put the slides in order so they are ablet to build or create a cycle.

The smartboard can be used to explore virtual field trips as a class and participate in webquests to learn about certain cultures or countries. The class can explore the White House or Colonial Williamsburg through virtual field trips and can electronically take notes along their journey. The students can also use webquest to explore different cultures such as the Mayan culture, or Native Americans, pyramids, and any historical concept. Map reviewing can also be used through the smartboard. Students can label different regions, countries, or cities by dragging pictures/objects to the specific area.
