Summary: Hãng hàng không Virgin Atlantic (Anh) hôm 24.2 cho biết họ đã thực hiện chuyến bay đầu tiên của máy bay thương mại sử dụng một phần nhiên liệu sinh học. Theo Hãng tin AFP, một máy bay Boeing 747 của hãng chứa nhiên liệu sinh học pha với kerosene đã thực hiện chuyến bay ngắn từ London (Anh) sang Amsterdam (Hà Lan) nhưng không chở theo hành khách.

Chủ hãng Virgin Atlantic, ông Richard Branson, mô tả chuyến bay trên là "bước ngoặt lịch sử". Máy bay sử dụng hỗn hợp dầu babassu, được trích xuất từ hạt của cây babassu (cây cọ cao có ở vùng rừng Amazon) và dầu dừa. Ông Branson khẳng định chuyến bay là bước đột phá đối với ngành hàng không và là bằng chứng cho thấy có những sản phẩm có thể thay thế nhiên liệu truyền thống dùng cho máy bay.Các hãng hàng không hiện cũng đang nhìn nhận nhiên liệu sinh học là sản phẩm thay thế rẻ tiền so với kerosene hiện rất đắt đỏ do giá dầu thô tăng cao. Tuy nhiên, các nhà môi trường học cho rằng nhiên liệu sinh học là sản phẩm thay thế tồi. Theo họ, việc phát quang đất hoang để sản xuất nhiên liệu sinh học thực sự góp phần vào sự ấm dần lên toàn cầu bởi chúng tạo ra lượng khí thải lớn gây hiệu ứng nhà kính.
