Project: Measurement

General Instructions

  1. This project is to be done on your own.
  2. You will be assessed according to the attached rubric. Please ensure that you read it carefully and that you comply with the requirements therein.
  3. You should hand in your answers on paper. Answers may be written in blue or black ink, or you may type your answers. For TASK 3, you will need to hand in your model as well as answers on paper.
  4. Presentation of your project will be considered when marking.
  5. Good luck and have fun!

Task 1: History of measurement

Write a page (250 to 300 words) about the development of measures of length from ancient times through to the imperial system and the metric system.

Be sure to include a list of ALL of your references.

Your description must be written in your own words, so be careful not to (accidentally or on purpose) plagiarize any of your references. [12]

Task 2: The five rand coin

For this part of the project, you will need to find yourself a new five rand coin.

  1. Measure each of the following dimensions of the coin in millimeters (correct to 1 decimal place) and convert each of your answers to centimeters (correct to 2 decimal places):
    1. the diameter of the whole coin, D (2)
    2. the diameter of the inner gold circle, d (2)
    3. the height or thickness, h (2)

    2. the total volume of the coin (in cm3). (3)
    3. the volume of the inner gold disk (in cm3). (3)
    4. the volume of the silver ring (in cm3). (2) [18]

Task 3: Building a random object

For the last task of this project, you need to do three things:

  1. Using the net supplied, build the three dimensional object shown below by folding it carefully along the fold lines and gluing it together on the glue flaps. (8)
