These modules about "PAN"--short for "steelpan" are directly related to the attempt to find ways in the culture and speech of young people in Trinidad and Tobago to improve their school Literacy. The collection is for the teachers-to-be of these young persons especially those who are at risk. Many of them reside in the still poor areas where the steelband originated. Music (and percussion music at that) is another gateway to Literacy. It entails composing, creating, reading, listening, speaking, writing and co-operative learning. Local teachers can make adaptations from the very useful modules that are included on teaching (young children) about the pan, even though these are written from a U. S. perspective. They can also involve the resource persons ("panmen") who visit their schools to work exclusively with the school steelband in more related whole-class activities.

With the implementation of site-based decision-making occurring in schools, the extent to which teachers perceive they are involved in decisions on planning, budgeting, curriculum, staffing patterns, staff development, and campus-level organization and the extent to which teachers’ views of their involvement in these activities are congruent with the views of principals, is largely unknown. Examined in this study were the views of 288 principals and teachers at high performing schools and low performing schools concerning shared decision-making practices in the areas of: planning; budgeting; curriculum; staffing patterns; staff development; and, organization. Statistically significant differences were present between principals and teachers in all six decision-making areas, with principals viewing teachers as having significantly more involvement in these decisions than was perceived by teachers. Implications of these findings are discussed.

The views of 46 mentors of first-year teachers were obtained regarding practices that they viewed as essential for their success in mentoring teachers. Specifically, they were queried about teacher involvement/support, staff development, administrative support, and resource materials. Almost all of the mentor teachers believed a teacher-mentoring program that had well-defined goals was absolutely essential to the retention of beginning teachers. Slightly over half, 56.6%, of the mentor teachers considered that staff development that provided strategies to serve students in special populations better was absolutely essential to the retention of beginning teachers. Mentors commented that the most difficult part of their duty were scheduling conflicts with the mentee, little support from administration, and no guidelines or training in what they were expected to do. Additional comments made by mentors consisted of the need for more time for the new teacher to grow professionally with less emphasis on TAKS scores. They also stated that standardized state testing was hurting schools because too much time was being spent on student test scores.

This is an initial guide for Trinidad and Tobago teachers on using the communication experiences of creole-influenced students to improve their Literacy. The ideas suggested here can serve as an alternative to the Language Experience Approach to the teaching of Reading for such students. Teachers can experiment with and develop this guide further or make their own. (Be sure to open the attached Example link/file in the nav. panel with Microsoft Powerpoint.) The "steps" in the guide are meant to allow for flexibility in teaching and learning Literacy. The rich oral traditions of the community (not mentioned in the guide) can also be incorporated into classroom work. "Native strategies for talk" are also included. These are "mental means" that accompany the type of talk and should assist Comprehension.

Few areas in our world today remain untouched by the influence of the new technology and its impact on education. Teachers must now devise new strategies for teaching and the exchange of information in classrooms with a view to improving Literacy and the comprehension of English among speakers of English-based creoles. We advocate research and experimentation with digital tools as one of the ways of involving young teachers in possible projects that will challenge their own Literacy as well as that in the wider society. THIS COLLECTION of articles was sourced on the Connexions server with precisely this aim in mind. The first article on the history of Literacy and the evolution of the Connexions (OER)model gives us the signal that the proliferation of digital tools and their use in education will radically alter the face of teaching and learning in the coming decades. The second article explores the topic of the changing learning styles of digital learners. We are in for an educational adventure that has implications for the way Literacy can grow and be a source of enjoyment among dialect speakers of English. These articles form a framework for an exploration of how digital tools can be used to enhance Literacy on our campus. The COLLECTION will be used for a discussion of the issues in workshops and as supplemental reading in Literacy related courses. It has evolved out of an initial exploration of the topic of technology and Literacy. Onr hopes that it will attract attention and feedback from others in the field of Literacy and the new technology.
