Business Ethics is a derived copy from the Corporate Governance course previously published in Connexions. While many courses using this title place emphasis on applying classical philosophical and ethical theory, this course's approach is decidedly interdisciplinary and practical. It is not designed as a socio-humanistic elective, a service philosophy course, or even an applied philosophical ethics course but as a laboratory, skills-based course where students develop, practice, and refine decision-making and problem-solving strategies that they will carry with them into the world of business practice. Emphasis has been placed on responding to the four ethical themes identified by the AACSB ethics task force: Ethical Leadership, Ethical Decision-Making, Social Responsibility, and Corporate Governance. Modules include (1) theory building activities (responsibility, rights, virtue), (2) problem specification frameworks emphasizing socio-technical system building and analogies with design, (3) specific modules responding to AACSB ethics themes (moral ecologies, corporate social responsibility, corporate governance, and a history of the modern corporation) and (4) modules that provide the course with a capstone, integrative experience (Business Ethics Bowl, Social Impact Statement Reports, and Corporate Ethics Compliance Officer Reports). While a quick glance shows that this collection holds more modules than can possibly be covered in a single semester, this approach gives the user flexibility as to the method used for integrating ethics into the business administration curriculum. Modules can be recombined into different standalone courses such as business ethics, business/government/society, or environment of organizations. Since each module can be covered independently, they can be integrated into the business administration curriculum as specific interventions in mainstream business courses in areas like accounting, finance, management, information systems, human resources or office administration. (In fact many have been written for and tested in these circumstances.) Business Ethics has been developed through the NSF-funded project, "Collaborative Development of Ethics Across the Curriculum Resources and Sharing of Best Practices," NSF SES 0551779.

This module began as a modification of the Gray Matters activity that is used in ethics training workshops at the Boeing corporation. (See Carolyn Whitbeck, Ethics in Engineering Practice and Research, 176-181 for a more detailed history.) This version is based on short decision-making scenarios provided by engineers participating in ethics workshops. Students practice integrating ethical considerations into realistic decision-making situations. This module is being developed as a part of an NSF-funded project, "Collaborative Development of Ethics Across the Curriculum Resources and Sharing of Best Practices," NSF SES 0551779.

This module contains the score sheets and cases for the Business Ethics Bowl that is held at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez. The scoring categories are Intelligibility, Integrating Ethical Concerns, Feasibility, and Moral Imagination and Creativity. These score sheets can easily be converted into a grading rubric for an in-dept case analysis. The Ethics Bowl was developed by Robert Ladenson at the Illinois Institute of Technology. The national competition is held every year during the conference meetings of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics. This modification of the APPE score sheets reflects the focus of the UPRM Business Ethics Bowl on decision-making as opposed to more general issues analysis. The categories also work from an analogy between the designing process in engineering and problem-solving in ethics. For a further explanation of the scoring procedure, see the module posted by this author for Ethics Bowl Rules and Procedures. This module is being developed as a part of an NSF-funded project, "Collaborative Development of Ethics Across the Curriculum Resources and Sharing of Best Practices," NSF SES 0551779.

Caution: this module is still under development. This student module is designed to help students write and analyze ethics cases in business and research ethics. It provides a short taxonomy of ethics cases, tips on identifying and writing cases, and a four-step framework for analyzing them. Converging, interdisciplinary research shows that identifying, developing, and studying ethics cases strengthens decision making and enables a concrete, "thick" understanding of basic and intermediate moral concepts. This module is being developed as a part of a project funded by the National Science Foundation, "Collaborative Development of Ethics Across the Curriculum Resources and Sharing of Best Practices," NSF-SES-0551779. It makes full use of the student module template developed in conjunction with this project.

This module has been revised to fit better within courses and modules in business education. It presents socio-technical analysis as a method for integrating ethical and social values into business practice. Socio-technical system analysis facilitates understanding the ethical and social impacts aspects of business but more fundamentally it helps to anticipate potential problems early on in the business process where they can be dealt with more effectively. This module includes different ways of setting up a STS analysis, provides case studies to make STS analysis concrete and realistic, and relates STS analysis to the dimensions of moral imagination and moral creativity which are so essential for effective problem-solving. Two socio-technical system tables are attached that serve as templates for decision making exercises as well as business product and process analyses. One table outlines the general components of the socio-technical system underlying the practice of engineering in Puerto Rico. Another, prepared by William Frey, Efrain O’Neill, Alberto Ramirez, and Agustine Irizarry, describes the socio-technical system underlying power systems engineering in Puerto Rico. A final table turns STS analysis more toward the business process by looking at the different components of the STS of a fictional corporation named "Burger Man." (This exercise was developed and taught by Paul Thompson in agricultural ethics classes and made available to the author during an Ag-Sat sponsored, multi-university course in agricultural ethics offered by Thompson in 1992.) Socio-technical analysis provides an excellent pedagogical response to various accreditation requirements including ABET (Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology) and AACSB (American Association of Collegiate Schools of Business). This module is being developed as a part of an NSF-funded project, "Collaborative Development of Ethics Across the Curriculum Resources and Sharing of Best Practices," NSF SES 0551779.
