Searching for a Better Way to Reach Students in Science and Engineering
He sought to "transform the way education is imparted", but realized quickly how difficult it can be for individual projects to make a global impact. Then he found the Connexions community.
"It was during this period when I wandered along different platforms," explains Singh, "that the simple infrastructure of Connexions made sense." This search for a better way to instruct others in the topics he loves lead him to conclude that "Connexions holds tremendous potential in its simplicity, robustness and importantly openness."
Singh foresees a future "wherein delivery of education becomes universal with the real possibility to realize the doctrine of free education," and indeed, he has been doing his part since 2006 to make this vision a reality. Authoring over 150 individual modules, Singh has crafted three Connexions courses, including Physics for K-12, Kinematics fundamentals, and A primer in MathML.
Connexions offers authors like Singh - highly educated professionals who are not, however, professional educators - the chance to impart to others the lessons learned in their studies and careers. And from the feedback Singh has received from students of his Connexions materials, he has reached learners from middle school through post-graduate studies.
Of the future success of open-access education, Singh believes that "the outcome is inevitable," adding that "the educational initiatives with quality will make sense to the users. If Connexions enables its reader to draw worth, then the face of education in all its manifestation will change forever."See also:
