This portraiture study of four exceptional scholars in education—John Goodlad, John Hoyle, Joseph Murphy, and Thomas Sergiovanni—provides insight into their scholarly work and life habits, direction and aspirations, assessment and analysis of major trends in the profession, and advice for aspiring leaders and academics. Telephone interviews with the leading scholars (4) and their referral colleagues (8), in addition to document analysis, validated the following criteria for the selection of exceptional scholarship previously generated via survey respondents (educational leadership professors): The scholar (1) publishes widely, (2) has broad impact, (3) has multiple spheres of influence, and (4) has established mentoring systems. Democratic concepts and agendas for education emerged from the interviews focused on exceptional scholarship, an outcome incorporated within the results.

In 2002, Educational Leadership distance education students at Ball State University were surveyed (Sharp & Cox, 2003). In 2004 distance education classes from Ball State University and the University of South Carolina were given the same survey. The purpose was to see if there were any different points of view between the studio groups and the groups at the remote sites and whether there were any changes in opinion between the 2002 and the 2004 survey. All 360 students in the 8 classes completed the survey in 2004. There was a substantial increase in the participation of students in distance education classes between 2002 and 2004. Students also become more accepting of the call-in features utilized in these classes. Students viewed attendance taking as less necessary in 2004. Less than 2% of the students in each survey thought the technology was a big problem and males and females participated equally in the distance education problem in both surveys. The overwhelming reason for taking distance education continued to be convenience.

The professional knowledge base is replete with theoretical postulations, research findings, and practitioner reflections on school improvement, school climate, and school culture. However, surprisingly little has been written that explains the complex role that school climate and culture can play in the school improvement process. The purpose of this article is to synthesize the professional knowledge base regarding the constructs of school climate and culture and to answer the following questions: How can leaders assess their school’s climate and culture? How do climate and culture affect, and how are they affected by, the school improvement process? and How can school leaders help to shape or develop cultures and climates that contribute to school improvement?

The academy’s zeitgeist—standards of scientific investigation—has recently come to the fore in the national arena as the dominant moral and intellectual framework for educational research. In this article, we explore the re-emergence of standards of scientific investigation as a significant shaping force in education and the scholarly culture, particularly in regard to the fields of leadership and administration. With the recent advent of politically based decrees of quality defined exclusively by traditional standards, alternative approaches to exploring human issues, however rigorous they might be in the qualitative realm, tend to be marginalized. Traditional, experimental studies that involve large-scale statistical research design and randomization have been authorized, making single-subject research, naturalistic inquiry, self-study, and other qualitative research practices unlikely candidates for federal funding. For this discussion on “authorized” and “unauthorized” perspectives of research, we explore the impact of regulatory practices within the academy.

Public education is one portion of a complex system of society that extends far beyond the walls of the schoolhouse. The administration of educational institutions is impacted and influenced by businesses, communities, governmental agencies, laws, special interest and not-for-profit groups, and the general citizenry. The demand of these groups to improve the quality of public education and prepare students for the world of work beyond school is becoming more intense each year. Universities can and should be instrumental in thinking "out of the box" in the development of school administrator preparation programs. This article reviews one university that is taking the lead in innovative program development by combining the organizational worlds of the service sector through the integration of preparation programs in educational, public sector, and nonprofit administration.

School districts find that success in bond elections is important to continued growth and development of schools. However, many districts find difficulty in developing the stakeholder support required to obtain a passing margin on bond referenda. In addition, research suggests that districts with prior bond election failures are more likely to incur future defeat in attempting bond passage. The purpose of this article is to analyze qualitatively three school districts that achieved bond election success after a prior failure. The results suggest that obtaining the support of teachers, listening and communicating to all stakeholders, and consistently building a foundation of trust to help in overcoming the negative sentiment. These results provide educational administration programs data regarding the importance of relationships in overcoming negative sentiment in bond elections.

Bricoleur, as presented herein, is used metaphorically and in a postmodern or post-formal (Kincheloe & Steinberg, 1999) sense to represent methods, practices and cultural materials that the scholar-practitioner uses as s/he interacts in the complex web of relationships among knowledge, inquiry, practice, and learning. The purpose of this discussion is to critically examine the role of the school leader within the multiple contexts of the school. Specifically, I offer an examination of the school leader as a scholarly practitioner who must draw upon a wide range of scholarly methods, practices, and knowledges necessary to working within and across the political, cultural, economic, and social dynamics of the school and society.

This article attempts to capitalize on the current efforts to examine the traditional discourse, to consider one that focuses on ethics, to examine resistance to alternative discourses, and to provide a tentative educational administration curriculum model that reflects ethics at the core of everything that is taught in educational administration preparation programs. We begin with an examination of the administrative narrative as it informs current discourse. We discuss the roles of administrative condescension and educator complicity in perpetuating the narrative. Finally, we present an educational administration curricular model using Phenix’s (1964) Realms of Meaning in an attempt to satisfy the requirement that ethics move to the center of the educational administrative narrative.

This article presents a protocol change leaders can use to navigate whole-system change in their school districts. The information describing the protocol will help change leaders in school districts and policymakers interested in whole-district change answer the question, “How do we transform our entire school system”? The protocol is called Step-Up-To-Excellence (SUTE; Duffy, 2002, 2003, 2004a, 2004b, 2004c). Every time SUTE is presented to an audience there is at least one person who calls out some “yes, buts”—statements questioning whether the protocol is practical, do-able, or valid. Three “yes, buts” that are frequently heard and responses to them are found near the end of this article.
