This collection of modules is from a Rice University, ECE Department Technical Report written around September 1994. It grew out of the doctoral and post doctoral research of Ivan Selesnick working with Prof. C. Sidney Burrus at Rice. Earlier reports on this work were published in the ICASSP and ISCAS conference proceedings in 1992-94 and a fairly complete report was published in the IEEE Transaction on Signal Processing in January 1996.

These modules are a reproduction of a set of laboratory experiments developed for the course ECE438 - Digital Signal Processing with Applications, taught in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University. This is a senior-level undergraduate course that covers the fundamentals of digital signal processing, along with several applications throughout the course. Some applications of particular emphasis are speech modeling, coding and synthesis, and also imaging processing topics including filtering, color spaces, halftoning, and tomography. Laboratory experiments are performed each week during the semester, so these modules are designed to be completed in 2-4 hours. While the labs are performed as part of a lecture course, the lab modules contain most of the relevant background theory along with the lab exercises. All of the lab exercises in this module set are written for Matlab by MathWorks. The modules are written for a student who has essentially no Matlab experience. A Matlab introduction is contained in the first module, and further Matlab skills and tips are provided as the modules progress forward.

A recurring technical task development of digital signal processing products and systems is the design of FIR digital filters. Fortunately some excellent software packages exist for the automatic synthesis of impulse responses for such filters, many of them based on the now-famous Parks-McClellan algorithm. Unfortunately, there is still some mystery about how to use the software and, equally important, how to estimate impulse response lengths short of actually designing the filter itself. This technical note primarily addresses the second problem and indirectly discusses a bit the first. We examine here how to convert a typical filter specification in terms of cutoff frequency, passband ripple, etc., into a reasonably accurate estimate of the length of the impulse response. Not only does this estimate suffice for most design tradeoff exercises, it usually allows the Parks-McClellan routines to be employed only once or twice rather than the multiple times needed when the “cut-and-try" method is used.
